DCHS Math Team Participates in Georgia Tech High School Math Day
L-R: Mason Mifflin (11th), Christopher Leonard (12th and GaTech bound), Kaylin Wu (11th)
The DCHS Math Team, sponsored by Mrs. Doerian Joyner, had a full day of academic competition with almost 100 high school students across the state on Saturday, March 9th.
The morning competition that the DCHS Team competed in was the Exploratory Round, which consisted of multiple choice questions and exposed students to a variety of math concepts.
During the midday, teams attended a session presented by GaTech professors and then they broke for lunch to prepare for the afternoon session.
For the afternoon competition, the students participated in the Team Round where they were grouped into teams and solved multi-part problems from various areas of math with “low floor and high ceiling”. The problems were designed to lead the students through a complex solution that explored an interesting concept similar in structure to the ARML Power Round. Each of the problems covered topics not typical for a high school curriculum, such as Graph Theory or Topology. Students worked towards solving one of these problems by solving smaller questions designed to guide them through the problem and develop intuition for the subject. Our team made the Top 20 cut and were so excited for their achievement. Mason, Christopher and Kaylin, DCHS celebrates your persistence, grit, and dedication.
It's Sophia Yang for the WIN!
Sophia Yang wins Congressman David Scott's App Challenge
Sophia Yang (9th grade) recently won first place in Congressman David Scott’s Congressional App Challenge with “BrainBoost,” an AI-powered application designed to support students in their studies.
Users can input any topic into the app, whether it’s about photosynthesis or quantum mechanics, and the app generates a concise summary of that topic. In addition, a customized quiz based on the provided topic is generated, enabling students to reinforce their understanding and knowledge retention.
“Sophia's innovation and advancement in technology is on full display with her BrainBoost App,” said DCHS Principal Kenja Parks. “Her eloquence, natural curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning make her a frontrunner as a young disrupter in the tech space. We take great pride and honor in celebrating Sophia, and we feel confident that she will continue to flourish in the fields of science and technology.”
Sophia will be invited to the House of Code in Washington, D.C., where she will have the opportunity to meet with other coders and program participants from across the country. Her app is also being displayed in the U.S. Capitol and on the House of Representatives’ website.
“I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of my Congressional App Challenge,” said Congressman David Scott. “Their ability to identify and solve problems with much-needed solutions speaks to their ingenuity and creativity. I am excited for this young generation of STEM leaders.”
In addition to winning Congressman Scott’s App Challenge, Yang has been racking up accolades for her science project “CanineCare: An AI-Based Approach for Mammary Tumor Detection in Dogs.” Yang’s project won first place at both the DCSS District Science Fair and the Regional Science Fair to earn a spot at the state fair in Athens in April.

The Douglas County High School baseball team is looking to compete for a playoff position in a super competitive Region 5-6A.
Coach John Farmer said his Tigers are led by a great group of seniors including Cameron Camp, Tre Relliford, Hunter Moore, Eli Matute, James Coker and Romeo Hewitt.
The Tigers also return impact players James Johnson, Brice Porter, Jaden Strong and Nayland Patton, he said.
Newcomers to watch this season are Alex Bemus, Preston Thorpe and Styles Bailey.
“The part that makes this team special is their chemistry,” Farmer said. “Our seniors provide great leadership to our younger players.
